Bulk User Move

Version 10.1 by Matthew Deceunynck on 2014/08/15 14:34

The Bulk User Move process allows a user to change simultaneously the placement of many Users from one Organizational Unit to another.

The process comprises four steps:

  1. Selecting the Origination and Destination Organizational Units.
  2. Selecting the Users to move.
  3. Moving the Users.
  4. Saving all of the moves made.
Step 1 - Selecting the Organizational Units

Two dropdown menus are provided, one for Originating Organizational Unit (OU) and the other for the Destination OU.  Pick the OUs that match your move requirements.

Step 2 - Selecting the Users to Move

Once the OUs are selected a list of users placed in each respective OU will be displayed in the list boxes below the dropdowns.  To select the Users to move mouse over the list of Users and click the row that contains the User to be moved.  Multiple Users can be selected by pressing Ctrl and clicking on other rows.  A range of Users can be selected by selecting one user and then pressing Shift and clicking on another User.

Selected Users will be highlighted as in the screen image below.  In the example image

Step 3 - Moving the Users

To move the selected Users from the Originating OU to the Destination OU, click on the 'Move Selected' button located at the top of the Originating OU Users list.  The Users should now be visible in the Destination OU Users list.  Next to the Users who were just moved will be the code of the OU from which the users originated.  In the example screen image below, 5 Users were moved.  The five Users no longer appear in the Originating OU Users list but are now visible in the Destination OU Users list with the Originating OU code of 'OU5' next to them.

Step 4 - Saving all of the Moves Made

Once all moves have been completed, clicking the Save button located at the lower right of the dialog will commit all the moves made to the database.  After Save is clicked, and the data are saved, the screen image below will appear with a message indicating that the moves were all successfully saved.

Additional Notes

There are a few additional notes to consider:

  • A User cannot be moved from an Originating OU to a Destination OU if that User is already placed in the Destination OU.
  • Multiple sets of User moves can be done within one Bulk User Move session.  For example:
    • OU1 is selected as the Originating OU and OU2 is selected as the Destination OU.
    • User A and User B are moved from OU1 to OU 2.
    • Next, the Destination OU is changed to OU3.
    • User C can be moved from (still selected) Originating OU 1 to the new Destination OU3.
    • If the Destination OU is changed back from OU3 to the previously-chosen OU2, the moves of User A and User B that were done earlier are still seen.
  • Clicking the 'Revert Selected' button when a User is selected in the Destination Users list will revert that User's placement back to the OU from where she originated.
    • Note: this only applies to Users who have been moved.  Clicking 'Revert Selected' while an un-moved User is selected will not take any action.
